Playbill advertising The Artful Dodger, performed February 15th, 1875 at the Lyceum Theatre, New York.  J. L. Toole was the Artful Dodger, a role he had already played 3000 times.  The main attraction on this playbill was The New Magdalen, the dramatization of a novel by Dickens’s friend Wilkie Collins.  The New Magdalen was one of Collins’s later, less successful novels.  In it, Collins attempted to address social issues with more enthusiasm than skill, prompting the poet and essayist Algernon Swinburne’s jibe: “What brought good Wilkie’s genius nigh perdition?  Some demon whispered ‘Wilkie!  Have a mission.’”
