A copy of the Foresters' Songster, published by the Ancient Order of Foresters in London, circa 1859.  It contains a six-verse comic song, “The Artful Dodger Who Knows a Thing or Two.”  The first verse reads:

“I am an artful dodger, I know my way about

And tho’ the p’lice search after me, they

ne’er can find me out:

First I’m the ‘swell’ then ‘gentleman’, and

then the beggar, too.

So they can ne’er the Dodger find who knows

a thing or two.”
