In 1849 an early spoof of Dickens’s Battle of Life was published.  It was entitled The Battle of London Life, or “Boz” and his Secretary by “Morna” (Captain Thomas O’Keefe).  The book recounts a series of bawdy adventures experienced by “Boz” and a male secretary, Mr. Phillipson.  The pair is portrayed traveling about London, with Dickens in search of unusual characters who might populate his novels.  At the end of these sketches Mr. Phillipson is exposed as a plant, being a member of the London Private Detective Police.  Having written one of the most imaginative publications taking advantage of Dickens’s fame, the author O’Keefe has been described as a “Broken Down Irish Gentleman.”  The illustrations for this book are by George Augustus Sala.
