A copy of a playbill for the week of August 24th, 1879 advertising Baldwin’s Theater, which was managed by Tom Maguire. It announces the appearance of Lotta Crabtree in Little Nell and The Marchioness!, from Dickens’s Old Curiosity Shop. The playwright was John Brougham.
Lotta Crabtree was a child prodigy. She had sung and danced in mining camps in the 1850’s and was a friend of the spanish dancer and actress Lola Montez. In the performance advertised by this playbill, Lotta Crabtree not only acts, but plays some banjo solos and does “her famous clog dance.” Lotta gave “Lotta’s Fountain” to San Francisco in 1875.
